IND vs WI 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma will enter his first match as Team India’s newly appointed full-time white-ball captain without regular partners Shikhar Dhawan or KL Rahul as the Men in Blue prepare for the series opener against the West Indies. While Rahul remains unavailable, Dhawan and backup opener Ruturaj Gaikwad have both tested COVID-19 positive, and are in line to miss the first ODI.

India did draft Mayank Agarwal in, but the Karnataka star will only be available for practice from Sunday having entered a three-day quarantine on joining up with the squad. The team management have also added Ishan Kishan to the main team, and the left-hander is already available for training, having been part of the bubble due to his involvement with the T20I team.

Kishan and Rohit have opened together for Mumbai Indians in the latter stages of the IPL last year, while Mayank and Rohit have opened in Tests before the former lost his spot to KL Rahul. Kishan’s availability and prior experience in the shorter formats of the game do give him an edge, along with giving India a left-right combination to face the new ball.

Former captain Virat Kohli is available and will bat at his usual No.3 slot, and will look to repeat his heroics of last time. Kohli hasn’t scored a century since the West Indies toured India back in 2019 and the 33-year-old will be itching together record straight. The team management tried Rishabh Pant at No.4 in South Africa, and that plot is likley to continue back home as well.

With Shreyas Iyer out, Suryakumar Yadav should get a nod for the No.5 slot, having shown glimpses of his immense potential in the 3rd ODI against South Africa. Yadav could slot in at No.4 as well and alter his game as per the demands of the team in the game.

With India not picking up any pace bowling all-rounders, Deepak Hooda and Washington Sundar are likely to make up the top seven. Hooda has been part of the Indian squad on two previous occasions but has never made his debut, which should change on Sunday. An IPL veteran, Hooda’s ability to chip in with overs will be an asset with India having a dearth of part-time bowling options in the set-up.

IND playing XI vs West Indies: Selection conundrum for Rohit Sharma

  • Ishan Kishan, Mayank Agarwal to fight for the opener’s spot alongside Rohit Sharma
  • Deepak Hooda likely to make his debut, while Suryakumar Yadav keeps his place in the XI.
  • Bowling combination conundrum for Team India with a three-way battle for all-rounders spot.
  • Prasidh Krishna set to feature in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence.

With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, both rested for the ODIs, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar should be in line to take up seam bowling duties. Thakur and Chahar both showcased their abilities with the bat in South Africa and will add to India’s depth against the West Indies. With Washington Sundar also set to feature, India could opt for Prasidh Krishna as the third pacer, while Yuzvendra Chahal could pip Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav to take over the role of the lead spinner.

Alternatively, following their batting exploits, India could promote either Deepak Chahar or Shardul Thakur to No.7 in the lineup, and re-unite the “Kul-Cha” partnership, which has had his fair share of success in the past. A debut for Ravi Bishnoi or Avesh Khan could also be on the cards, but Rohit Sharma could stick with the experienced personnel for the 1st match of the series.
